Although as a child my answer to the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” changed frequently—veterinarian when my pets were sick, singer during my Motown phase, lawyer when I wanted to negotiate an extended curfew—I don’t recall ever considering the possibility of multiple professions. I always assumed I’d eventually find that one career that I could happily pour all of my energy and passion into. However, now that I’m in my mid-twenties, I find that I’m doing so much more professionally than I ever expected.
My work with Cosmic Toast Studios is so varied my business card would probably be more accurate if “Etc.” were included at the end of my title. I organize, I feed, I paint…if there’s a task that needs done and no one to do it, I fill in. I never know exactly what to expect from a day at the studio, but the ability to wake up each morning and be excited to go to work is more than I could’ve ever hoped for in a job.
Once I leave the studio for the day, I step into my role as vice president and lead writer for LAMusicBlog.com. This position provides me with the opportunity to interact with artists and feed my ears a constant stream of music, something I’d been doing recreationally since childhood (remember the Motown phase?). The team here at Cosmic Toast is so supportive of one another, they even contributed to the making of a video interview of Del Casher for the website.
Last night I was all set to dive into a LOST marathon on Hulu when I experienced a mental breakthrough regarding a script I’m currently writing, and thus I was prevented from paying proper attention to the island inhabitants. That’s right, when I’m not working at Cosmic Toast or analyzing the latest music releases, I’m an aspiring screenwriter like oh so many Angelenos.
Although having multiple career focuses means that even my free time isn’t necessarily free from thoughts of work, I am lucky in that I love my jobs…all three of them.
